Christian Education Ministry

Deaconess Fannie Parker, Director Deaconess Shirley Taylor, Coordinator
The early formation of this ministry began from the initiative of Sister Inez Watson and Sister Mattie Speller who attended a Christian Education workshop at the J. J. Johnson Campsite in Fayetteville, NC. Sis Watson received permission from the Pastor, then Rev. H. H. Murrill to set up Christian Education in the Church.

It began in a similar manner as the Sunday School program. Three classes were formed which provided instructions for the adults, teens, and youth of the Church. The classes met on Sunday evenings once a month. New convert classes were started and converts were instructed to be ready for Fall Revival.
Some of the first members were Alice Ballance, Annie M. Bond, Mary V. Bond, William Bowen, Willa Dawson, Vashti Cooper, Fannie Miller, James Miller, Phefie Small, William Small, Sr., Mattie Speller, Charlie Stewart, Estella Stewart, Inez Watson, Lee Alma Watson, Doretha Williams, Rudolph Williams, Sarah Williams.
Under the Leadership of Pastor Shelton R. Barnes, Christian Education gave birth to The Baptist Training Union (BTU) with Lee Alma Watson as President. Prayer Breakfast was united with the BTU to strengthen it and help to increase Saturday morning attendance. The faithful membership at this time included the following attendees: Hannah Bazemore, Lynette Peele, Phefie Small, Rev. William Small, Jr., William Small, Sr., Mildred Turner, and Inez Watson. Prayer Breakfast, and BTU was held on the fourth Sunday at 4:00 PM unless there were pending engagements.
In 1999, Naomi Bazemore was appointed Director of Christian Education. She helped to revamp the BTU and secured teachers for the teen (Delores Roberson) and youth (Diane Miller) classes. The current officers for BTU are: Linda Pugh, President, Joanna Rascoe, Vice President, Hannah Bazemore, Secretary, Mildred Turner, Treasurer. Through the Christian Ministry, students were recognized for academic achievement in schools and universities. Thereafter, the leadership of Vice President moved toward another leadership change, upon the resignation of Sis. Rascoe, Sis. Shirley
B. Taylor was called upon to fulfill the duties as Vice President. Where God guides, he will provide. Under Sister Bazemore’s directions as a Christian educator, the ministry held Saturday sessions as well as fourth Sunday afternoon training sessions. Sister Bazemore was willing to provide informative sessions for all age groups. After several years of service, Sister Naomi Bazemore relinquished her duties as Christian Education/BTU Director.
Pastor Barnes looked upon Deaconess Carolyn S. Outlaw as the new Director of Christian Education/BTU (Baptist Training Union). President, Carolyn S.
