SUNDAY SCHOOL

History

The National Sunday School efforts began during 1824 in America with the primary focus of teaching the Word of God with increased comprehension, retention and application; and most importantly, giving individuals an opportunity to receive Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. It was during the 1940s that Cedar Landing organized its first Sunday School. In the Cedar Landing Community, Sunday School classes were often held in community schools; two of which were the Roy Thickett School and Mary Meta School. This was due in part to the lack of transportation and the distance between homes and the church. Church services were only held one Sunday a month. Members of the church often walked or traveled by mule and cart for miles in order to attend church and Sunday School.
The interior design of the church included one large open space for the sanctuary. All of the Sunday school classes were held in the sanctuary. The Sunday school classes were sectioned off in the back corners and in the center of the sanctuary. The adult class was held in the “AMEN” corner. As years passed, the Sunday School became the primary outreach arm of the church. Sunday School teachers were usually lay people who were selected based on their active roles in the church and their ability to teach the bible. (Romans 15:4 “Whatsoever things written were written for our learning”).
Some of the earlier Cedar Lading Sunday School teachers were: Brother Solomon Carter, Brother Simon Mebane, Brother Andrew Outlaw, Brother Alfred Spencer, Brother Peter Williams, Brother Rueben Allen, Brother Sam Thompson, Brother Thomas Will Mourning, Brother Ben Gray, and Brother Musca Sutton. Later, others to carry the torch as Sunday School teachers were Deacon Johnnie Mebane, Deacon Plummer Speller, Deacon Richard B. Speller, Deacon Simon Speller, Deacon Solomon White Sr., Deacon James Miller and Deacon Harvey Rascoe, Sr.
Deaconesses and other women of the church with understanding of God’s Word also taught Sunday School including Sisters Martha Watson, Clarine Mebane, Estelle Stewart, Mattie Lou Speller and Alice Ballance.
As years passed, Senior Saints of the church noticed a young couple, Rudolph and Doretha Williams who exhibited a passion for serving God and HIS people. They were provided guidance and gained wisdom from their elders and later became leaders of the Sunday School.
Cedar Landing has reached the masses through Sunday School teachings for decades. A body of born again Christians continues to meet each Sunday mornings to teach God’s Word for the purpose of arming men, women and children for battle in a sin-filled world. They are now elected and hold offices of Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Secretary, Treasurer and Teachers. They are a group of dedicated, committed believers who are morally and spiritually strong. Sunday School classes are classified as Primary, Intermediate, Teen and Adult. “Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart”.

The Sunday School department is affiliated with Christian Organizations such as Bertie County Sunday School Union, West Roanoke Association, various Christian Workshops and Training sessions. The mission of outreach and recruitment is a call to spread the Word of God.
During the 1990s, Sister Nancy Wilson and Sister Patricia Cherry coordinated and planned Sunday School, Church and family trips. The church visited various states, cities, amusement parks and toured several locations.
In the year 1999, the teens were taught skills of record-keeping and served effectively in the capacity of Secretary to the Sunday School Department.
