History

 

Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1866 under the leadership of Pastor Abram Mebane. During this time an Usher Board was organized.

In the early 1930’s, under the leadership of Elnora Rascoe the Usher Board grew. Their uniform attire was black and white.

 

In 1965, Mrs. Zetella Watson was President, Mrs. Willie Speller, Vice President; Mrs. Lucille Winborne, Secretary; Mrs. Cornelia Bond was Assistant Secretary and Mrs. Katie Jordan, Treasurer. The group worked well together to maintain a positive atmosphere.

The Usher Board President in 1968 was Mr. Lewis Carter; Vice President, Mr. Wesley Gray; Treasurer, Katie Jordan; and Mrs. Willie Craig, Chairperson of the Program Committee. During their leadership the Junior Usher Board was organized in 1968.

 

In 1975, Mr. Wesley Gray became President and Mrs. Alice Stewart accepted the position of Secretary. Mr. Gray was dedicated and served until his health declined in 1994. At this point, Mr. Morris Rascoe stepped in to serve. Mr. Rascoe promoted buying usher badges and books.

 

In the latter part of 1994, Mrs. Emma Smallwood accepted the position of President, Mrs. Alice Stewart, Vice President; Mrs. Deloris Roberson, Secretary; Nancy Wilson, Treasurer; and Mrs. Emma Peaches Pugh, Assistant Treasurer. During Mrs. Emma Smallwood compassionate leadership the Usher Ministry grew. Mrs. Smallwood maintained Usher training and appropriate attire. In 1997, President Emma Smallwood requested a leave of absence to care for her beloved mother. At this point, Mrs. Alice Stewart became the Ministry’s acting President.

 

In 2001, Emma Smallwood was unable to resume her position as President but Mrs. Alice Stewart continued as President; Vice President, Mrs. Deloris Roberson; and Recorder, Mrs. Margaret Askew. Mrs. Stewart dedicated leadership increased the number of Senior and Junior Ushers.

 

Currently, since 2010, Mrs. Deloris Roberson is President, and Alton Cooper is Vice President. We have hosted Usher training with the West Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association. We plan to implement safety and emergency precautions. We will continue to recruit Senior and junior Ushers. Our goal is to maintain a cheerful, caring attitude to our Church Family and visitors; be approachable and maintain service with a smile. We believe in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”
